Dawn Redwood (Metasequoia glyptostroboides — also called Water Fir, Shui-shan)
Mature Size: 70–100 ft tall, 25–40 ft wide
Growth Rate: Fast (2–4+ ft/year when young)
Sun Requirements: Full sun
Water Needs: Moderate to high; prefers moist, well-drained soils but tolerates wetter sites
Foliage Color: Bright green, turning coppery-bronze in fall before dropping
Flower Color: Inconspicuous; reddish-brown cones
Bloom Time: Spring (cones mature in fall)
Hardiness Zones: 4–8
Notable Features: Deciduous conifer (unusual for conifers); feathery, fern-like foliage; symmetrical, pyramidal shape
Other Facts: Thought to be extinct until rediscovered in China in the 1940s; related to bald cypress and coast redwood; tolerant of urban conditions and adaptable to various soils
